Saturday, November 05, 2005

Sorry, it took so long. But here it is, the long awaited life of me. Man, I took forever on describing everything. But I think I did good. I love hip hop, yea! Peace n Love Yalls.

"Soundtrack of My Life: The Life and Times of Dante Derrick David and the Hip Hop Lifestyle”

Opening Credits: Notorious BIG – Juicy

It was one of Biggie’s first singles so I thought it would be a great start to the “Soundtrack of My Life.” The first couple lines go -> “It was all a dream, I used to read Word Up magazine, Salt-N-Pepa & Heavy D up in the Limousine” I mean really. I love songs for their beat first, but then when the lyrics are great too, man then that’s just an instant classic. Bad Boy Records got on the scene with this song and it was the start of my bad boy life. Ok well not really bad boy, haha.

Waking-Up Scene: De La Soul - Me, Myself, and I

I don’t know if its because the De La Soul Dunk SBs are coming out, but 3 Feet High & Rising, their first album, was a great album. And of course the most recognizable of the songs was this one. Waking up, I mean that’s all about me, myself, and i. You know getting out of my too small of a bed where my feet hang off the end to a new day of life.

Spring Scene: Guru - Now You’re Mine

Yall gotta check this one out. I love the beat, I love the horns and the drums in this one. Guru aka Gangstarr got the lyrics down on this track. It’s a basketball song. And I love basketball as yall know. The beat, the lyrics, man I can play ball to this song all day long. “360 dunk in yo face, you just a basketcase” ok I kno I cant dunk but I don’t think there is a better bball song out there.

Average-Day Scene: KRS-One - Step Into A World

This is a great song to break to and if I could breakdance I would be on top of this one. But really everyday is another day in which I live. Everyone has their own different perspectives on life and how to live each day. And this one, you step into mine. Yea!

Best-Friend Scene: Fu Schnickens – What’s Up Doc

I know Jill asked why this is my best friend scene and I really don’t know why exactly. I just thought that with the hook “What’s Up Doc, Can We Rock?” is something I would tell my best friend. You know when we be chillin and livin life, fo sho. Haha. And plus this song featured Shaq and I thought when Shaq did his thang on the mic, that he was pretty good.

First-Date Scene: Bow Wow - Like You

This is prolly my guilty pleasure song. You guys are prolly “Bow Wow?” “why?” but really I think bow wow is trying to take the throne as the MC of love from Uncle L, Mr. Smith, LL Cool J. I mean I love the lyrics to this song and if yall have heard me listen to this song, u kno imma say the lines to it too. “In affection cuz I will be your affection, kinda hard job but imma do it to perfection.” Great first date song and I mean ciara is featured on the track and they going out so its only fitting.

Falling-In-Love Scene: Fugees - Ready or Not

“Ready or Not, here I come, you can hide, gonna find you and make you want me.” The beat to this one is great, I don’t know what Mario Winans had to use it again so soon. But the beat is nice and slow. Falling in love is nothing easy, so taking it nice and slow where you get to know each other is a better formula. And I mean it’s the Fugees, they were great and I am glad that they are back together.

Love Scene: Foxy Brown - Get Me Home

I pay tribute to the lady MCs by using the Foxy track with Blackstreet. I love the beat and it’s a sexy song. “Got ta get you home with me tonight. Oh O Oh O!” Foxy is half black half Filipino, so I thought that was always dope. I mean that’s me, half black half Filipino, no? O, alright!

High Scene: LL Cool J – Rock The Bells

LL Cool J is known, like I said above, for his love songs and how he can lick his thick ol lips. But people don’t know that he was a pretty good MC especially in his younger days. People sometimes forget that he did more than “I need love” or “Doin It” and with this song he kept it original. This is my high scene where he straight up rocks the bells with the beat and lyrics.

Hook up Scene: Chingy - One Call Away

I love this song, and it features J Weave, Jason Weaver, the guy from the Smart Guy and that fella who played the young Michael Jackson in the made for TV movie, “An American Dream: the Jacksons story” shown on ABC, and the original singer of “I wanna be King” from the Lion King Soundtrack. Ok but going back to the actual song, “give me a call if you wanna come roll with me, I’m only one call away.” No matter how far apart you are, we are only one call away from one another. The video also featured the little girl from the Cosby show and she was looking good in to. So this is my hook up scene.

Sex Scene: Outkast - Jazze Belle

Outkast has been going strong throughout the years but imma going back to the ATLiens album for this one. The beat to this one is also a nice and slow one. And when I think of the name of this song, it reminds me of my favorite Disney girl character who I thought was the hottest of them all, Belle from Beauty and the Beast.

Summer Scene: DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince - Summertime

This is when Will Smith was a better MC, because he had Jazzy Jeff fixin up with the right music. But really this is just a laid back summer song that I love so much. “And think of the summers of the past, adjust the base and let the alpine blast, pop in my cd and let me run a rhyme and put your car on cruise and lay back cuz it’s a summertime.” The Fresh Prince was definitely on point with this song.

Fight-With-Friend Scene: Pharcyde – Runnin

“Cant keep runnin away…..” like really we cant keep running away from all our struggles. We gotta face it and take it full on, accepting it and trusting. I know Mya did a recent track with the beat and even with Pharcyde too but it still don’t compare to the original version.

Break Up Scene: A Tribe Called Quest – Scenario

I really don’t know why I put this song for this scene except for the fact that this song was always a song I grew up listening to. Busta Bust is featured in the song, and then with ATCQ, equals a pretty good combo.

Get-Back-Together Scene: Bone Thugs-N-Harmony - Look Into My Eyes

I had to put Bone up in the mix. This one is from the Art of War album, dat crazy double album by the group. “Look into my eyes and tell me, what it is you see in me…” I think with the scene, the whole concept of getting back together is really finding the true beauty of one’s self. Finding yourself, then finding yourself in that special person. You don’t have to see eye to eye on everything as long as there is the understanding.

'Life's Okay' Scene: 2Pac - Keep Ya Head Up

“Ooohh try, things are gonna get easier…” I love L.A. ok well I love 2Pac. That fool really put it down in his lyrics and his words. A true poet. I think I would have put more 2Pac songs for this soundtrack but Imma just save his other songs for future projects. But also, I don’t if yall know but I always say ‘keep ya head up’ to myself and to others and its all because of the man 2Pac Shakur. I cant believe its been over 9 years since his death. But man does his legacy continue. Yea!

Fall Scene: Puff Daddy feat. Ma$e – Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down

I couldn’t do the soundtrack without putting my man Diddy on the scene. Haha. Ok well I know I could have left him off the list, but really he should go back to producing using the samples he used to do. I know he all this big entrepreneur and all now but I think Bad Boy was at its greatest with Biggie and when he did his sampling bits. In this song we get the sample from the “Message” by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. “Cant nobody hold me down, cant nobody take my pride, o no, I got to keep on movin” Its my fall scene cuz with every new fall season is the beginning of a new school year, so with that it indeed is fall because I begin to fall. But with this song, no matter what, nobody gonna hold me down.

Heartbreak Scene: DMX – Slippin

Dark Man X. That this fool is my dogg. Haha. But really I think DMX is another great rapper. I loved his songs especially that one called “The Prayer.” But with this song its all there. “Ay yo I’m slippin, I’m fallin, I cant get up” Every heartbreak is hard and with every heartbreak I be slippin, fallin, cant get up.

Mental-Breakdown Scene: Jay-Z - Hard Knock Life

Jigga man himself Jay-Z. I know this song was from “Annie” but I think it worked really well with this scene. I mean Annie herself lived a hardknock life, and I think all of us do. This song really just lays it out there and admits that we have tough times in life. Like forrealz, we need to just recognize that its hard and accept it with open arms. It helps to realize the low times, so we know how high those high times really are.

Driving Scene: Beatnuts - Watch Out Now

The Beatnuts, part of the Terror Squad, and were poppin when Big Pun was still alive. But I love the beat to this one. This is my tribute to the Spanish flavor of hip hop. Haha. Driving scene to me is having that song that really wakes u up when you driving and with the beat for this one, it gets me movin.

Winter Scene: Paperboy – Ditty

This one is another classic that I like to pop onto the music deck and listen to. Winter season is a time of the holidays and I thought that bustin out some paperboy is a nice way of entering the happiness of the holidays. I mean whats a better way of warming up for the colder season than with an OG song. You kno before all those Christmas songs blast up on Kost starting after Thanksgiving.

Lesson-Learning Scene: Brand Nubian – Don’t Let It Get To Your Head

I love this song. Ever since it came out, I been loving this song. Like really, don’t let it go to your head. We all have struggles, problems, hard times. But it really is how each person perceives that certain situation. As long as we don’t let it go to your head, all things can be a lot easier. And dats fo sho. Holla!

Falling Asleep Scene: Slick Rick – Children’s Story

“Uncle (Der)Ricky, can you read me a bedtime story…..” how fitting I think. Slick Rick was also one of the pioneers of Hip Hop and this one has always been a classic. So get your pajamas on, go brush your teeth, put those bedcovers and blanket over you, and listen to Uncle Ricky.

Deep-Thought Scene: Mos Def & Talib Kweli – Definition

“I said 1, 2, 3, Mos Def & Talib Kweli-li-li. We rockin to the tip top, best alliance in Hip Hop. Wayo. I said 1, 2, 3, its kind of dangerous to be an MC-e-e, they shot 2Pac and Biggie, too much violence in Hip Hop, Wayo!” Mos Def and Talib Kweli are prolly two of my favorite MCs of all time because of their style and this one hooked on me the minute I heard it. This is their definition, and with every deep-thought is my definition. Yea!

Flashback Scene: Ahmad - Back in the Day

This one we going way back. Everyone I think knows the hook, “back in the day, I was young I’m not a kid anymore, but somedays I wish I was a kid again.” I was just talking about this, with how life is so complex. So many things in life that its so crazy, where sometimes you just wish you were young again to the times when you would just eat, sleep, and play all the time. Life was so simple when we were young.

Party Scene: Tracey Lee - The Theme (It’s Party Time)

“O its party time, having a party!!!” Tracey Lee busted on the scene with this hot track, too bad he didn’t last too long in the game. But this song has a nice beat to it. Definitely a party/club song. Stretch out, get those nice clothes on, put that smile on the face, then hit the dance floors cuz “O its party time!!!”

Regret Scene: Kanye West – Addiction

I love Kanye West, cuz he represents the best. Forrealz from the college dropout to late registration to whatever his next album is, he gonna drop it like its hot. I mean I know he samples hella songs but man does he do it with style. When I think of Kanye’s songs, there were too many to pick from but I found this one to be a good regret scene song. “Why does everything that’s so bad, make me feel so good, everything they told me not to, is exactly what I would, man I tried to stop man I tried the best I could, but, make me smile with my heart.” In life, there are times when we know what we doin is not the best choice yet we still do it no matter the consequences. Its kinda like that whole thing about the risks we take. Risks are risky but that’s the way we choose to deal with certain situations. So this addiction is my regret scene.
Happy-Dance Scene: Black Eyed Peas - Joints & Jams

I know Ang did this song too but really it is a great song to dance to. I mean the video was one thing too, at end of it where they just dance all around. I mean I don’t dance like them but it’s a track I would just always dance to. And also this was the era when I loved the BEP, before that damn Fergie girl came in. They should have changed their name to BEPW or something when she came in, cuz she messed up the flow. If yall know what I meant by BEPW, yall are dope, or maybe even BEPC. Actually yea, if you know what I meant and you actually read all this, tell me what I meant by BEPW or BEPC and I might hit u up with a surprise or treat. Haha.

Long-Night-Alone Scene: Wyclef - Gone Til November

I picked the slow version of this song not the fast one with Canibus. The slow version is perfect for a long night alone scene, or in this case, a long life ahead of you scene. Wyclef was never really the same without the Fugees but I thought this song gave him a name in spite of everything. But really, this song “I’ll be gone til November…” It really hits home for me right about now, but that’s just another story.

Spiritual Scene: Common - The Light

I know this song really talks about a relationship with another person. Some might be wondering why then a spiritual scene. But the way I am interpreting is that we are never alone when we think we are. By this, I mean you know we never alone cuz we have the man on top always there. And also, we never alone cuz we always have people praying for us, especially with the beautiful friends we have through Liwanag and through His light. So dats why its my spiritual scene. And yes Common is also one of top MCs of all time.

Closing Credits: Nas - If I Ruled The World

“Life….I wonder….Will it take me under…..I don’t know???” So as I close the end of my movie this is the song. We really don’t know what we have in our future, if we did that would be cheating life and really experiencing our lives to the fullest. But really, even as I sit here now typing this, I don’t kno whats gonna happen to me tomorrow. There is always those If statements, so hard but they are always there. Nasir Jones, it was written, another great MC, and how my soundtrack ends now……and cut!
